Dear Ann and Ian,
I was so sorry to hear the sad news of Colin's death. I wanted to pass on my sincere condolences to you both and your extended family. As you know , I had the good fortune to know your Dad through Cathy. He reminded me in so many ways of Cathy's Dad Norman, who Colin was best friends with. They both were gentlemen in the true sense of the word. On the sadly too few occasions we were able to meet your Dad on our trips to the States, he was always such good company and always generous. I will never forget his kind and generous invitation to his 90th birthday party in Maui. It was so lovely to meet you both and the rest of the family and friends.
I shared his love of history and I enjoyed discussing with him his remarkable history of the American Civil War in 20 A4 pages. He had such a great knowledge of both the US and the British politics too. He was very modest about his distinguished career achievements in the US. He took full advantage of the American dream and deserved all the success he achieved.
Cathy and I will both be thinking of you and the family on Saturday.

We have lost a great man who shared his vast knowledge and took care of many people in his life including me. Colin was always there with guidance as well as sympathy when needed. I am so happy he had many years of retirement but unfortunately without his love Eileen who he lost too early. Rest in peace my leader and friend.

Colin was my boss, mentor and friend for over 40 years. He was with me through good times and bad times and was always available to listen and give advice. I'll miss our times together over many years that included adventures, great dinners, fun gatherings, and just quiet visits at home with pizza and wine. I'll still talk to you every day... I hope you are enjoying a celestial cup of tea with your beloved Eileen.
