I remember the Horans with great fondness from the time they lived next door to us in Baltimore on Chapelgate Lane. Kathy would sometimes babysit me and take me next door to visit her parents. When I asked who they were, she said, "that's my mommy and my daddy." So forever after, I called them "my mommy" and "my daddy." I was later a flower girl in Kathy's wedding. And I had a crush on Dennis! Some years later, my grandmother and I visited them after they moved to Trumbull. We took the train up and had a great visit. Like my brother Alan, I also remember Petey and playing football. (I think I had a stuffed dog that I named Petey.) I suspect Kathy and David may remember me as "Charlie," which was my childhood nickname. (Also "Chuck, Chaz," and "Chazmania.") Thinking of these memories brings a smile to my face. Rest in peace, "my daddy!" Much love and sympathy to the family.

Part two:
Two of my favorite memories (and forgive me if my dates are wrong): After they had moved away, Mr. and Mrs. Horan (and Dennis?) came to visit us at the end of January just in time for the Blizzard of 66. They got snowed in and had to stay extra days. After the snow quit we trekked up Edmondson Avenue to the Highs Store for milk, etc. Buried cars were just mounds in the drifts of snow.
Three or four years later we visited them in Trumbull. The visit included a football game in the back yard in the pouring rain. Mr. Horan, holding towels, grinned, shook his head, and said leave those muddy shoes and wet clothes at the back door.
This good man is now at rest after a life of dedication to his family, his country, his community, and his vocation.
Goodbye Old Buddy.

I grew up in the neighborhood of Ten Hills in Baltimore, a Protestant surrounded by Catholics - the Hunstigers on one side, the Horans on the other. What a blessing that turned out to be. My relationship with these two wonderful neighbors helped shape the man I grew to be.
Mr. Horan could show a perhaps intimidating visage to the young boy next door, except for that hint of a grin that was always ready to break out at the corner of his mouth. I remember my younger brother Scott and I being guests for a supper of spaghetti with sausage and meatballs, playing football and baseball in his yard with his son Dennis, and his loyal beagle companion Petey.
Chapelgate Lane didn't seem right when the Horans moved to Connecticut - I missed them.
Part one of two.
