Obituary of Robert J. Manjoney
Dr. Robert John Manjoney, 80, of Trumbull, died surrounded by his loving family Tuesday afternoon, December 12, 2006, at St. Vincents Medical Center, Bridgeport, CT after a brief illness. Dr. Manjoney, a Bridgeport native, was born in 1926 to Vincent and Mary Manjoney. His parents, both pharmacists, operated Manjoneys Pharmacy on East Main Street, Bridgeport, CT. After graduating from Milford Academy, Dr. Manjoney along with his twin brother Richard attended Tufts University. He was inducted into the U. S. Army in 1944, where he served with duty and honor. While stationed in Southern Germany, Dr. Manjoney acted as a translator and a liaison. He received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during his service. Upon returning to the area after the War, he attended St. Michaels College in Colchester, Vermont and transferred to University of Vermont, where he received his Undergraduate degree in 1949. Like his two brothers, he pursued a career in Medicine and followed them to University of Vermont Medical School. On receiving his Doctorate of Medicine in 1953, Dr. Manjoney returned home and began an internship at St. Vincents Hospital. After one year, he entered the Residency Program at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, New Haven, CT in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He returned home and joined his twin brother Richard in private practice for three years. After his brother left the area, Dr. Manjoney continued a private practice and then joined the Womens Medical Group, PC where he remained until his retirement in 2001. He was on the staffs of St. Vincents Hospital, Park City Hospital, and Bridgeport Hospital. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Connecticut State Medical Society, and St. Vincents Retired Physicians Association. Dr. Manjoney was a communicant at St. Theresa Church in Trumbull where he was a member of one of the first lay advisory boards, and along with his wife, one of the adult advisors to the church Youth Council. He also advised soon-to-be-married couples in pre-Cana Counseling. Dr. Manjoney was a kind and gentle physician, loved by his patients and respected by his peers. He was a compassionate doctor who helped many during his medical career. This brilliant, dedicated physician is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Carole; his children, Carole McDonald of Fairfield, CT, Robert Manjoney, Jr. of Trumbull, CT, Lauren Martin and husband, Dr. David Martin of Easton, CT, and Mark Manjoney and partner Vincent Santillo of New York City, NY; Mother-in-law Jean Angelo of Trumbull, CT; grandchildren Daniel, Matthew, and Amanda McDonald, and Andrew Martin; his brother Dr. Vincent Manjoney of Trumbull, CT, his twin brother, Dr. Richard Manjoney of West Haven, CT, and many nieces and nephews. Dr. Manjoney will forever be remembered for his humor and storytelling. He was extremely thoughtful and cared greatly for everyone he knew. He was an avid reader, gardener, traveler, and computer enthusiast, and he enjoyed playing tennis. Above all, Dr. Manjoney was a man who truly loved life and the people who shared it with him. He will be greatly missed. Special thanks go to the staff of St. Vincents Emergency Room and the staff nurses of the Medical Intensive Care Unit who treated him with not only professionalism, but caring, compassion, and dignity, and to his nephew Dr. Vincent Manjoney Jr. who oversaw his care. Calling hours will be on Sunday, December 17, 2006 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., (Route 127) Trumbull, CT. Funeral services will take place on Monday at 9 a.m. from the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. in Saint Theresa Roman Catholic Church, 5301 Main Street, Trumbull, CT for a Mass of Christian Burial.
