Obituary of Michael J. Malik

Michael J. Malik, Uncle Mickey, age 85, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of the late Josephine Chacho Malik died peacefully in his home on Sunday, January 30, 2011.

Michael was born in Bridgeport on August 14, 1925, the son of the late Emerick and Mary Merva Malik. He was also predeceased by a brother Edward E. Malik. Michael served in the Army during World War II as a member of the 83rd Infantry Division. He was captured as a POW on September 11, 1944, and spent three months in a German Prison Camp after being wounded during capture. He was discharged on December 18, 1945 as a Private First Class. He is a decorated War Hero receiving the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, ex-POW, ETO, Victory Medal and Unit Citation. Michael was a long time member of the VFW Post 145 and the Catholic War Veterans. Michael was a retired roofer with the City of Bridgeport Board of Education. He loved fishing, gardening, playing the accordion and was a loyal New York Yankees fan.

Michael is survived by his beloved family, brother, Emerick Malik, sister-in-law, Rose Malik, nephew, Edward P. Malik, niece, Kathleen M. Chagnon and her husband (who was like a son to Uncle Mickey), Charles T. Chagnon, great-nieces, Nicole Malik, Meghan Malik, Colleen Chagnon, and great-nephew, Charles E. Chagnon. He is also survived by several cousins and his very special friends, Steve and Rose Kinik.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the caring staff at St. Vincents Medical Center, St. Josephs Manor, Family Care Plus and Sol Amor Hospice Care, especially his very special caregiver and friend Christopher Forman and his very special nurse and friend Alice. 

Funeral services will take place on Friday, February 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. from the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull and at 11:30 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church, Trumbull for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call on Friday morning from 10:00-11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
