Obituary of Leopold J. Maia

Resident of Bridgeport Leopold (Leo) Joseph Maia, age 78, son of Joseph Santos Maia, died on Friday, October 16, 2009 at his residence. Leo was born in Bridgeport on March 29, 1931. He attended Wheeler and Washington Grammar School and graduated from Central High School in 1949. As a young man, he worked at Bridgeport Bedsprings before entering the Marine Corps in 1951. Leo did a tour of duty as a sergeant in Korea. During his service, he was on the championship volleyball team. After being honorably discharged, he worked at the Bridgeport Brass Co. In 1956, he married the former Monica Downs, they recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Shortly after, he joined the United Illuminating Co. working as a meter reader, then a lineman and finally a dispatcher before retiring in 1994 after 40 years. In his leisure time, he enjoyed traveling to Cancun, the New England states and cruising the Caribbean and Hawaii with his friends and family. He also was a member of the VFW Post #9460, Port 5 and the Germania Schwaben Club. His best memories were of growing up in the Hollow section of Bridgeport. He was a member of the Rector AA. His time golfing with his best friends at the Concord for 25 years was the topic of many an evening conversation. He loved to remember all the old times with his friends and family. He was pre-deceased by his son, Christopher J. Maia. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters Maribeth Maia and Joanna Cafora and her husband Thomas III, a granddaughter, Calista Cafora, a grandson Thomas Cafora IV, a great granddaughter Sophia Reagen and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Information Funeral services will take place on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, and at 10:00 a.m. in St. Andrew Church, Bridgeport for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
