Obituary of Hemlata Hemraj Khona

Hemlata Hemraj (Peer) Khona, age 78, of Trumbull passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Bridgeport Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Hemraj Khona. Born in Bijapur, Karnataka, India on April 10, 1946, she was a daughter of the late Tokarshi and Hirabai Khimji (Mota) Peer. Early in her career Hemlata had taught in India as a primary education teacher. Upon her arrival in the United States, she studied part time to earn her 2nd degree in Accounting, while she worked fulltime and raised 2 young children. She worked in the finance department of the former People's Bank in Bridgeport, where she built many friendships over the years. Most recently she had been employed by the city of Monroe in the tax collector's office.

She enjoyed baking, decorating and gift giving. She was honored to accumulate many hours of volunteerism at the Trumbull Women's Club. As a proud American, Hemlata was immensely honored to volunteer with the Homes for the Brave organization. A devoted religious Jain, her other enjoyments included listening to cultural Indian music and anytime she was surrounded by her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored. A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend of many. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her beloved husband of 55 years, Hemraj, other survivors include her devoted children, Dharmendra Khona and his wife Yuki of East Brunswick, NJ and Rita Opp and her husband Brian of Stratford, her cherished grandchildren, Jatin Khona and his wife Lindsay, Adam Opp, Arina Khona, Carli Opp, Mason Opp, Alayna Khona and Melanie Opp, her sisters, Nirmala Momaya of Trumbull and Jayshree Gala and her husband Nayan of Mumbai, India, her sister-in-law, Meeta Peer of Pune, India as well as several nieces and nephews too numerous to mention. She was predeceased by her brothers, Devendra and Narendra Peer and her sisters, Vasantbala Peer and Charulatta Patel.

Remembrance & Viewing will be held on Saturday, December 14 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull, CT 06611.

Services will be held from 11:00 am to 11:30 am

Interment will be held privately for the immediate family.

A Celebration of Life reception in Honor of Hemlata Khona will follow the service at 12 noon at Vazzano's Four Seasons.
