Obituary of Irene Marie Hughes SSND

Sister Irene Hughes, a School Sister of Notre Dame, died at St. Vincent Hospital, Bridgeport, Connecticut, on September 20, 2024. She was born in Malden, Massachusetts, on June 22, 1936.

After pronouncing her first vows in 1956 as Sister Mary Irena, she taught in Puerto Rico for 20 years, and then in Warwick, New York, and Greenwich, Connecticut. Sister Irene was Coordinator of Peace and Justice Activities for her SSND Community. In Dorchester, Massachusetts, She taught Spanish at Msgr. Ryan High School and later at Elizabeth Seton Academy. At Caroline House in Bridgeport from 2005 to 2015, served immigrant women by teaching English. In her retirement Sister resided at Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, and later at the Watermark, Bridgeport.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 in St. Andrew Church, 435 Anton Street, Bridgeport for visitation at the church at 11:00 am, a wake service at 11:30 am and a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 noon.
