Obituary of Raymond Szwec Sr.

Raymond Szwec, Sr., age 86, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of Marie A. Spinelli Szwec, passed away on Friday, January 5, 2024 at St. Vincent's Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Born in Benkowic-Wyshnin, Poland on April 29, 1937 he was a son of the late Katherine Nerka Szwec and was a longtime resident of Bridgeport.

Ray came to this country with his mother escaping WWII. They settled in Bridgeport. He joined the United States Marine Corps where he achieved the rank of Corporal and was awarded the sharp shooter medal. Upon his return he met and married Marie Ann Spinelli also of Bridgeport. They had two sons and were active in both church and school activities. He loved playing the horses and watching football. He was employed at Dow Corning with over 25 years of dedicated service. Ray retired and enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends. He was a longtime member of the Ukranian American Club of Southport.

In addition to his beloved wife Marie of 63 years, survivors include his two loving sons, Raymond Szwec, Jr. and his wife Darcie and Joseph Szwec and his wife Diana Almada, a half-brother, Basil Sahajdak, two grandchildren, Gillian Smithers and her husband Cooper and William Szwec and a great grandson, Wesley Raymond Smithers.

All are invited to attend a funeral service on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church (corner of Barnum and Noble) with Rev. Ivan Mazuryk officiating. Entombment with full military honors will follow at St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may greet the family on Wednesday, morning from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull with a Panachida service at 9:30 am.
