Obituary of Jean A. Abriola

Jean Corarito Abriola, age 89, of Trumbull, beloved wife of the late Kenneth L. Abriola, died on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at Vitas Hospice in St. Mary Hospital, Waterbury. Born and raised in Bridgeport, she was a daughter of the late Patsy Sr. and Alice Bennett Corarito, and was a Trumbull resident over 70 years.

Jean attended Staples School and was a member of the Warren Harding High School Class of 1950 and had served with the reunion committee. With great pride she would explain how she was the first of her Italian American family to attend college and how she would walk to the downtown train station in Bridgeport and travel daily to the New Haven State Teachers College.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree in 1954 and her Master of Science Degree in 1980 from the University of Bridgeport.  Jean was a dedicated educator and taught at both Thomas Hooker and Barnum Schools in Bridgeport. After a fulfilling 32 year career, she retired in 1992. Jean was member of the Greater Bridgeport Retired Teachers Association and served as the Scholarship Committee Chairman. She was also a past member of the Sigma Iota Theta Teachers Sorority and the Pinewood Lake Women’s Club. She was devoted to her faith, and had served as a Religious Education Teacher and Eucharistic Minister at Christ the King Parish, Trumbull and was a past member of the St. Theresa Guild of Holy Rosary Church, Bridgeport. Never at a loss for words, in her heart she was always kind. Jean was the consummate teacher. At the family funeral home she would assist by answering the phone and for years made lunch daily for the Parkview crew.  We will fondly remember the many well-planned vacations and family gatherings that were filled with love, laughter, good food and happy times.

In addition to her husband, Ken, she was also predeceased by her brother Patsy Corarito Jr. and two sisters, Alberta Pelletier and infant sister Gloria Corarito.

Survivors include her two sons, Dr. Kenneth P. Abriola of Glastonbury and James S. Abriola and his wife Laura of Trumbull and her three cherished grandchildren, Rachel Marie, Christina Nicole and Vincent James, her loving sister, Rose Sawicki and her husband Donald of Arizona, two brothers in law, Roland Pelletier of Monroe and Dr. Salvatore Abriola of Southbury and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers from Home Instead and nurses from Vitas Hospice.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at 9 a.m. from the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull and at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen Church, 6948 Main Street, Trumbull for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Nichols Village Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may call on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
