Obituary of Robert J. Cannone

Robert J. Cannone, age 78, of Newtown passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at St. Raphael Hospital in New Haven. He was the beloved husband of Mary Lee (Villano) Cannone. Born in Bridgeport on September 22, 1943 he was a son of the late James E. and Sally May (Mead) Cannone. Mr. Cannone was a proud U.S. Army veteran, having served his country honorably. Robert was a baker his entire life, having started his career early on at Ann’s Bakery in Bridgeport. He later worked at Zeisler’s Bakery before eventually finishing his long career of providing tasty confections at Luigi’s in Trumbull. Robert enjoyed fishing. He was also a sports enthusiast, rooting for the New York Yankees and the New York Giants. His love for sports was also satisfied through coaching his daughter’s softball teams over the years. A loving and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and friend of many. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his beloved wife Mary Lee of 51 years, other survivors include his cherished daughters, Jamie Cannone of Danbury and Patsy Cannone of Newtown, his brother, Richard Cannone and his wife Susan of Bridgeport, his brother-in-law Pat Villano and his wife Susan of Massena, NY,  his dear aunt, Mena Mead, his goddaughter Jeanne Wadelton, and his special great niece and nephew whom he adored, Josie and Anderson, as well as several additional nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Michele Cannone. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. directly in St. Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Rd., Newtown. Entombment will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Dr., Wallingford, CT 06492.
