Obituary of Dorothy S. Canal

Dorothy Canal, age 97, of Stratford and longtime resident of Westport for over 40 years, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at her home. Born in New York, New York on October 5, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Wilbur and Dorothy (Dart) Schoonmaker. Dorothy had been employed by Westport Bank and Trust as an Executive Banker for many years before her retirement. She was an avid fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers and then the New York Mets. Dorothy, known to many as “Dottie” Canal,  was an active supporter of the Westport PAL football and Little League programs and an enthusiastic mom in the stands at many Staples High School football, baseball, softball and field hockey games. As a strong advocate for all animals she took in many stray dogs and cats over the years and many became integral parts of the family. She enjoyed listening to Nat King Cole and was famous for her potato salad that was enjoyed by everyone. Her greatest enjoyment however was found in the time she spent surrounded by her family and grandchildren, whom she adored. A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend of many, she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her loving children, Charlotte Cotton, Christopher Canal, Missy Canal and Douglas Canal, her cherished grandchildren, Charlotte Canal, Christopher Canal Jr. and Timothy Fennell, and her great grandson Charlie.

The family would like to recognize her caretakers, Marva and Mecca, who were wonderful and never missed a day during the pandemic.

Friends may greet the family on Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. Funeral services will take place at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shakespeare Veterinary Hospital, 47 Nichols Ave., Stratford, CT 06614.
