Obituary of Miguel A. Guzman

Miguel A. Guzman, age 80, beloved husband of Isabel M. Guzman of Stratford, passed away on Monday, March 22, 2021. Born in Utuado, Puerto Rico, he was a son of the late Adolfo Guzman and Rosalina Irizarry.

Miguel, a.k.a Toño, left Puerto Rico and arrived to New York City in the early 1950's. In the late 1960's, he relocated to Connecticut where he worked as a chemical specialist at Polycast. He had a strong love for mathematics and was a self-taught engineer. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to owning several businesses from Guzman's Dry Cleaners and Gift Shop to Guzman's Appliances. In the 1970's, he ran for Alderman of Bridgeport, CT, where he was a strong advocate for the community. Many people know him as a service technician while he spent the last five decades forging great relationships within the community.

Toño was a passionate artist who throughout his life, explored painting, poetry, theater, and music. He was proud of his Puerto Rican heritage and instilled his love for the culture in his children and grandchildren. He had many quirks, and as we recently discovered, frequently called in to his favorite radio station, WICC 600. He loved growing his garden vegetables and showing off the fruits of his labor, spoiling the family pets, and feeding the backyard wildlife.

Toño was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Marie Hernandez (David). In addition to Isabel, his beloved wife of 55 years, survivors include his loving children, Michael A. Guzman, Madelyn Guzman-Olivo (Luis), Mildred Guzman-Young (Stephen), Migna Guzman (Michael Karp), Isabel Guzman-Palyo (Gregory) and Michelle Guzman-Hemenway (Michael), a brother, Catalino Guzman (Josefina Rivera Avila), sisters, Elena Guzman (Otilio DeJesus), Norma Guzman (Tomas Rivera), seven grandchildren, Luis M. Olivo, Ashley Olivo, Ariel J. Leon, Daniel J. Leon, Mandy Young, Caden Young and Gregory S. Palyo, Jr., and a cherished great grandson, Coby J. Leon.

A public outside service will take place on Monday, March 29,2021 at 11:30 a.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, CT followed by a gathering at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, 2610 Nichols Avenue, Stratford, CT for Toño's final resting place. Visitors are asked to wear masks and social distance as they pay their respects.
