Obituary of Kathleen T. Hickey

Kathleen T. (Burns) Hickey, age 54, of Trumbull passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at Bridgeport Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Willian Hickey. Born in New York City, NY on May 25, 1966 she was a daughter of William J. and Theresa (O'Connor) Burns of College Point, NY. Kathleen graduated from St. Agnes High School in College Point, New York before attending Hunter College in New York City for nursing. She subsequently earned her FNP-ANP graduate degree in advanced practice nursing at Pace University, her Masters' at New York University, and her Doctorate of Education at Columbia University - New York.

Dr. Hickey was an Associate Professor of Nursing at Columbia University School of Nursing. She also held a joint appointment in the Division of Cardiology (electrophysiology) as both a family and adult nurse practitioner, and was a Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Faculty Scholar. Her interdisciplinary research and clinical practice focused on the areas of cardiogenetics, the clinical care and management of those with atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, and the prevention of sudden cardiac death. Her recent grant awards included an R01 from the National Institute of Nursing Research (iHEART) and her past research includes an R03 from the National Institute of Nursing Research, a Clinical Translational Service Award-funded pilot award, and a Columbia University Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy award. She was the first recipient of Columbia University School of Nursing's Outstanding Young Investigator Award in 2007, and was selected to attend the NINR Summer Genetic Institute in 2009. She has published in numerous peer reviewed journals, and is actively engaged mentoring DNP students and nurse practitioner students in the Columbia University School of Nursing.

In addition to her parents and beloved husband William of nearly 28 years, other survivors include her loving daughters, Kaitlin and Megan Hickey of Trumbull, her sister, Eileen Farrell and her husband Sean of Floral Park, Long Island and her brother, Liam Burns and his wife Laura of Hauppauge, Long Island, and her mother-in-law, Nora Hickey of the Bronx, New York. She was predeceased by her father-in-law, William J. Hickey.

A walk-through visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. Face masks and social distancing are required as guests enter the building, pay their respects and then exit the building in order to allow others the same opportunity. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in Christ the King Church, 4700 Madison Ave., Trumbull. It will be live-streamed on the parish's website and Facebook page. Interment will follow in Nichols Village Cemetery, Trumbull.
