Obituary of Jan P. Nagel

Jan P. Nagel, age 61, of Trumbull, beloved husband of Nancy Halsey Nagel, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 7, 2018. Born on October 15, 1956 in Springfield, South Dakota, he was a son of the late John and Frances Ludens Nagel.

Jan and Nancy married in their hometown and were blessed with three children. Jan was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished the time he spent with his family. He was often found cheering on his grandkids at soccer games, biking with them, and making everyone laugh.

Jan received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of South Dakota and then accepted a position with KPMG LLP. He was admitted into the partnership in 1990. His tenure with KMPG took him from Minnesota to England, to Massachusetts, to Connecticut, and to New York. Jan worked with persistence, skill, and wisdom. While he excelled in his career, beyond the work itself, he enjoyed the relationships, caring deeply for many colleagues and clients with whom he worked. Jan retired from KPMG in 2017.

Jan was a passionate and dedicated leader, investing countless hours volunteering and serving on numerous boards. At the time of his death, he was Chair of the Board of Elders at Calvary Church in Trumbull and was Chair of the Bowery Mission's Board of Directors. He served on the Bowery's board for decades and was passionate about the work they do.

Jan cherished time spent with Nancy, as well as his children and grandchildren. They knew they were incredibly loved. He had a passion for mentoring the younger generation. Jan managed to find time for hobbies as well, most notably running, a sport he picked up in the latter half of his life.

Jan's life has been defined by integrity, faithfulness, devotion to his family, and excellence in all he did. Yet he would have been the first to say that he could not take credit for his success. He was clear, even from the time he was in high school, that any good in him or his life was from the Lord. His faith in Jesus was the driving force behind his approach to life. His faith in God was unshakeable even through his difficult cancer journey. His family is confident that he left this earth and entered heaven to the words of, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

In addition to his beloved wife of 44 years, Nancy, survivors include his loving children, Scott Nagel and his wife Cherie of Trumbull, Kristine Landru and her husband Paul of Trumbull, and Katherine Nagel of New York, NY; six cherished grandchildren, Nathan, Abigail, Jessica, Laura, Katie and Lily; siblings, John Nagel and his wife Bev, Jim Nagel and his wife Darlene, Sandy Carlson and her husband Dennis, Linda Hiles and her husband Roger, and Jay Nagel and his wife Diane; father and mother-in-law, Glen and Sarah Halsey, sister-in-laws Connie Ferdig and Janice Bailey, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister-in-law, Delina Nagel.

Relatives and friends can greet the family at a memorial gathering celebrating Jan's life on Friday, October 12, 2018 at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull from 4–7 P.M. A memorial service honoring Jan's life will take place on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 10 A.M. Calvary Evangelical Free Church, 498 White Plains Rd, Trumbull, CT 06611.
