Obituary of Joseph Barillo

Colonel Joseph Barillo, U.S. Army Retired, age 95, of Sarasota, FL passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 27, 2018 surrounded by his loving family at the home of his daughter. He was the beloved husband of 62 years to the late Marie Rienzo Barillo. Born in Garfield, NJ on August 26, 1923 he was a son of the late Gesualdo and Carmela Catronia Barilla. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, he served his country honorably during World War II, where he liberated concentration camps including Buchenwald. He had obtained the rank of Colonel through his 30 years of dedicated service both in active duty and as a reservist. Joseph obtained two Master's Degrees in both chemical and electrical engineering. He was a Senior Research Scientist for Lever Brothers and where he developed the formula for Dove Soap. As a research chemist he specialized in surfactants and had 18 patents.

Survivors include his loving children, Madeline Barillo-Flagg and her husband Gregory of Trumbull, CT, John Barillo and his wife Tref of Indianapolis, IN and Dr. David Barillo and his wife Linda of Charleston, SC; his eight cherished grandchildren, Alexandra, Victoria, Madeline Marie, Suzanne, Cooper, Nathan, Anthony and Catherine, a brother-in-law, Dr. Albert Rienzo and his wife Alia of Ocean, NJ, and a sister-in-law Erma Rienzo, wife of the late Dr. Frank Rienzo as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by seven sisters and a brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at St. Anselm Church, 1028 Wayside Rd., Ocean, NJ.  Interment will be held privately at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.
