Obituary of Josephine Faggella

Retired Teacher Josephine Armeno Faggella, age 95, of Stratford passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, December 26, 2006, at Lord Chamberlain Nursing Home in Stratford. Josephine was born in Cerreto Sannita, Provincia di Benevento, Italy to the late Antonio and Angelina Armeno. She came to this country in April 1912. Josephine graduated from Stratford High School in 1929, New Haven Normal School in 1931 and the College of New Rochelle, NY in 1934. She studied for her Masters Degree and 6th Year at Fairfield University. Josephine also studied Italian at the Italian University in Perugia, Italy and Spanish at the International University in Coah, Mexico. She taught Biology in the Bridgeport and Stratford public schools as well as Italian and Physics. Her career also included teaching nursery and elementary school. She was a teacher at Central High School during the Bridgeport Teachers Strike in September 1978 when, at 67 years of age, she was incarcerated at Camp Hartell in Windsor Locks, CT for three weeks for refusing to cross picket lines to return to work. The following year she retired after 39 years of teaching saying that enduring the Strike had made her realize that she had given all that she could to advance her profession. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women, the CEA, and the NEA. After retirement she expanded the volunteer work she enjoyed doing. She worked for the Greater Bridgeport Retired Teachers Association, was President of the Queens Daughters, President of the local chapter of the AARP, was on the Board and membership chairperson for the Shakespeare Guild, did publicity for the Avco retirees, was a member of the Stratford Community Organizations Council and was on the Commission on Aging for the Town of Stratford among other volunteer work. She loved to travel and visited all continents except Australia and Antarctica. She was predeceased by her husband Vincent M. Faggella. Survivors include sons, Vincent J. and his wife Kathleen, and Joseph A., both of Stratford, a daughter Olivia Pisano and husband Vincent of Orange, four grandchildren, James and Kathryn Faggella and Vincent and Joseph Pisano. Funeral Information Funeral Services will take place on Saturday, December 30, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. from the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull and at 10:30 a.m. in St. James Church, Stratford for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery, Stratford. Friends and relatives may call on Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
