Obituary of John A. Caltabiano

November 06, 2009 Old Lyme Resident John A. Caltabiano, D.V.M, 55, of Old Lyme, passed away on Friday, November 6th after a courageous battle with cancer. A Trumbull native, Dr. Caltabiano graduated from Trumbull High School. He attended Providence College and received his medical degree from Iowa State University School of Veterinary Medicine. In 1980, he established the Mobile Veterinary Medical Clinic, one of the regions first house-call practices. Known fondly by residents of Southeastern Connecticut as the mobile vet, his patients included a variety of large and small animals from pet mice to circus elephants. In 1997, as president of Taits Every Animal Matters, he launched the nonprofit TEAM Mobile Feline Unit, Connecticuts first and only mobile spay/neuter and vaccination clinic for cats. With his oversight, TEAM has sterilized more than 128,000 cats and is now a national prototype. His most recent innovation was the development of FeralStat, a feline oral contraceptive created to end feral cat overpopulation and suffering worldwide. He was also a proud partner in his familys restaurant, Tonys Huntington Inn, of Bridgeport. Dr. Caltabiano will be remembered by family, friends, clients and colleagues not only for his independence, positive spirit, generosity, and sense of humor, but alsoand most importantlyfor his fierce commitment to the compassionate care and treatment of all creatures, great and small. He will also be remembered for his devotion to his family, aunts, and cousins. Dr. Caltabiano was predeceased by his father, Anthony V. Caltabiano. He is survived by his longtime partner, Donna Sicuranza, of Westbrook, and by the family he dearly loved: mother, Gloria Caltabiano of Trumbull; sister and brother-in-law, Donna C. and Mark Vogel, of Trumbull; sister Toni Caltabiano, of Trumbull; brother and sister-in-law Anthony V. Jr. and Krystyna Caltabiano of Trumbull; niece Christen Vogel and fiance Adam Buxbaum; niece Krysta Caltabiano; nephews Anthony John (A.J.) Vogel, Brian Vogel and Anthony V. Caltabiano, III; and loving aunts and cousins. Funeral Information A Memorial Mass celebrating his life will take place on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. directly in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 200 Shelton Rd., Trumbull.
