I was watching this newscast every night from 1957, when I was two years old, onwards. I always looked forward to the weather report segment of the broadcast. It was amazing to my young mind back then that a woman news anchor was on my TV. I've always remembered Gloria Okon.

I just saw that Gloria had died back in 2012. I was a boy when she appeared as the weather reporter on "Three Star News" on WPIX, Channel 11. I loved Gloria; she was so warm and motherly. Her sponsor, Arnold Bread, was featured in a lovely tune, at the start of her segment. She might have sung the recorded tune. It went:
"Butter and eggs, and loving care, make Arnold taste, beyond compare."
I cherish the memory of Gloria Okon, and her calm, quiet grace, as a part of my early television viewing.

My Dad Kevin P. Kennedy, worked at WPIX doing the nightly news back in the 60’s. I was lucky enough to have met Gloria Okon when I was a very young girl. I loved her Instantly. She had the biggest, brightest eyes and welcoming smile. She was one of our first pioneering women in TV. She always had a big smile and a kind word.
My Dad always referred to Gloria as a great gal, and enjoyed working at WPIX with her. I just happened to google her name and found out she had passed. I’d like to express my deepest condolences to her family. I do remember being introduced to her son Teddy (as she always called him), and going to a Christmas party at their home in NY. Those were truly the good ole days!

Thank you for sharing your memories, Marianne. I remember well your father reporting world news as the opening segment of "Three Star News." The news was much too "adult" for me to understand at that time. What I was fascinated by was a large globe that slowly rotated over his shoulder as he reported. Your father seemed very serious and excellent in his role as reporter of world news. His segment was followed by "New York News," with John Tilman. Its sponsor was Con Ed. Did you ever meet John?

I remember your dad on that broadcast too. There was always a globe of the earth rotating behind him above his left, in the wall. It was the first time I'd ever seen a globe, and one that rotated too. I first learned about the Soviet Union and Nikita Khrushchev from him, as well that there was a larger world out there. I was two years old.

Although its November 2019, tonight some friends and I were talking about weather shows of the past, I mentioned Gloria's and then I decided to look her up, it's then that I found out she had passed 7 years ago. The good old days. Peace be with Gloria.
She is still remembered so well.

I was watching FOX news tonight and Joe Concha was on and for some reason I started thinking back when I was a teen growing up in NJ & used to watch the weather with Gloria Okon and never missed it - almost majored in meteorology.
How I remembered her name 60 years later is amazing. So I searched and found she passed in 2012.
Well - my blessings to her family
