Obituary of Gary E. Hammill

Loving Husband and Father Gary E. Hammill Sr., age 58, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of Joanne Grant Hammill, died on Friday December 9, 2011 in St. Vincent Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Born in Bridgeport on April 12, 1953, he was a son of the late John (Jack) and Edna Secor Hammill. Gary was currently an assistant to the Most Reverend William E. Lori, S.T.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport, and also worked at the Arena and Ball Park at Harbor Yard and was formerly employed by PerkinElmer. A longtime and dedicated parishioner of St. Augustine Cathedral; he was involved in many activities and functions at the church and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a lifelong resident of Bridgeport who grew up in the P.T. Barnum Apartments and graduated from Bassick High School in 1972. Gary had a true passion for cooking and had attended the Culinary Institute of America and was formerly employed at the 19th Hole, Stratfield Hotel, and Fitzgerald Caterers. He was a dedicated and loving husband and father who will be deeply missed. In addition to his beloved wife Joanne, of 36 years, survivors include two devoted sons, Gary E. Hammill, Jr. and his wife Tracey and Timothy Hammill all of Bridgeport, brother and sisters; Robert Hammill and his wife, Elsie of Shelton, Patricia Saja and her husband, Robert of Shelton, Linda Carr and her husband, Joseph of New Jersey, Jody Hammill Ojeda of Bridgeport, Donna Teixera and her husband, Edward of Bridgeport, Karen Varney and her husband, Glenn of Stratford, Virginia Jimenez and her husband Gilberto, and Kathleen Hammill both of Bridgeport; aunts and uncles; Raymond Secor, Marge Scollin, Ester Mrozek and her husband Chester and Joan Hammill; brothers and sisters-in-law, William Grant, Robert Grant and his wife Mary Ann, Ruth Ann Jeter and Kevin, Roger and Kathy Grant. He also leaves to cherish his memory many nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and friends. He was predeceased by two sisters, Christine Molina and Carol Hammill, and a niece, Sara Ojeda. Funeral Information Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, directly in the Cathedral of St. Augustine, 359 Washington Ave., Bridgeport at 10:00 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Most Reverend William E. Lori, S.T.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport. Interment will follow in St. Michaels Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call on Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull.
