Obituary of Joseph R. Dondero

Joseph R. Dondero, age 97, of Fairfield, beloved husband of Patricia Cordone Dondero, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5, 2025 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Hartford, CT on March 23, 1928, Joe was the son of the late James and Mamie Dondero.

A dedicated public servant, he worked for over 30 years as a Civil Engineer and Surveyor for the City of Bridgeport. Joe proudly served his country during the Korean War.

He remained active in his community as a volunteer firefighter in Fairfield. A man of many passions was a long-time referee for Fairfield Rec basketball and played softball with the Connecticut Travelers. He continued his love for the game by umpiring Fairfield softball until the age of 91 and bowled at Nutmeg into his 80's. 

In retirement, Joe found joy in caring for his grandchildren and became an avid golfer. Joe will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his strong community spirit, and life well lived.

In addition to his beloved wife of 63 years, survivors include his three loving children, Maria Shapiro and her husband Randy, Dawn Dondero and her husband Savas Synodi and James Dondero, two cherished grandchildren, Zachary and Julia Shapiro, two sisters-in-law, Lucille DelMonaco and Regina Shapiro, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 13, 2025 at 10:00 am directly in Holy Family Church, 700 Old Stratfield Rd., Fairfield. Interment will be private. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Thursday from 4 – 7 pm in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull.
