Obituary of George W. Tietjen

George W. Tietjen, age 82, of Trumbull, CT loving husband of Maureen (Pyers) Tietjen, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 3, 2025 after a brief illness. Born in New York, NY on December 8, 1942, he was the son of the late Henry and Eleanore (Kretschek) Tietjen.

George grew up in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan and graduated from George Washington High School in 1960. He spoke so often and fondly of his childhood neighborhood, that his children felt like they knew the streets and landmarks (most notably The Inwood Lounge), even though they rarely visited. George honorably served in the 69th Infantry New York Army National Guard as an infantry medic and graduated from Rutgers University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. He embarked on a successful sales career with several companies including Johnson & Johnson and Michelin Tire. George's career brought him to Middletown, CT where he and Maureen raised their family and was the place they called home for over 40 years. After retirement, they moved to Trumbull to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

George was a great story teller who would spin tales of his travels as a salesman. Just mention a town anywhere in upstate New York or New England and George would immediately tell you the name of his nearest customer and some of his favorite local restaurants. He had a story for any occasion, but often needed help from Maureen to remember the names of the people in his anecdotes. He would describe everything about the person, and it was her job to come up with the name…which she did at least 90% of the time!

Outside of work, George and Maureen loved to travel and had many wonderful trips across the US and to the 'Hamas (as the Bahamas was called by their grandson). George also loved photography, a passion he passed on to his daughter. He took many beautiful photos of nature and interesting architecture, but the most cherished pictures were those he took of his family. He loved all sporting events, but his favorite teams to watch were the Yankees and the NY Football Giants. George spent many days cheering on his teams surrounded by his family, especially his son, son-in-law and grandsons who share his love of sports. He also became a big fan of swim and dance, watching live streams of his granddaughters' swim meets and dance competitions.

George was regarded as a kind man by all who were lucky enough to know him, with a generosity of spirit as big as he was.

In addition to Maureen, his beloved wife of 58 years, survivors include his two loving children; a son, Kevin Tietjen and his wife Heather; a daughter, Laura Citarella and her husband Jason; four cherished grandchildren, Colin Tietjen and Michael, Keira and Julia Citarella; a sister, Elizabeth Cosgrove, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Stephen's Church, 6948 Main St.,Trumbull. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, www.stjude.org.
