Obituary of James V. Betz

James V. Betz, age 80, of Trumbull, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of 56 years to the late Linda M. (Denes) Betz. Born in Bridgeport on August 13, 1944, he was a son of the late George and Louise (Petrill) Betz, Sr. Mr. Betz was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served his country proudly before his honorable discharge. He attended Sacred Heart University,  completing his undergraduate studies and later obtaining his Master’s degree from the University of Bridgeport. He then began a long career in the Bridgeport School System, where he held the position of Assistant  Superintendent. The consummate educator, he was an avid writer and was also the founder of the Classical Studies Academy located on Beechwood Avenue in Bridgeport. Jim had a knack for gardening and took great care and pride in the meticulous landscape of his yard and gardens. He also had a keen ability to fix all things around his home, where there wasn’t a job that he couldn’t handle. His greatest enjoyment, however, was found in the time he spent surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren, whom he adored. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend of many. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his devoted sons, Chad Betz and his wife Cathy of Milford and Justin Betz and his wife Holly of Shelton, his adored grandchildren, Jordan Betz and Anna Betz, and his brother, George Betz Jr. and his wife Sharon of Milford  as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Linda, he was also predeceased by his sister, Linda Grella.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 7, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. directly in Christ the King Church, 4700 Madison Ave., Trumbull. A private interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull.
