Obituary of Dorothy A. Koger

Dorothy A. Koger, 96, passed away on August 17, 2016 at her home in Trumbull, CT. Born on December 22, 1919 in Bridgeport, CT to Theodor and Margaret Hauslaib Anton, Dorothy spent her childhood on a farm in Easton, CT before moving to Trumbull. She graduated from Bassick High School in Bridgeport, in 1936. She began her working career at Investors Mortgage in Bridgeport and worked at several jobs before retiring from Crawford and Russell in 1982. During World War II, Dorothy volunteered many nights working with the USO in Bridgeport where she met her future husband. She married Lawrence Koger in 1947 in Trumbull, CT. They were happily married for 17 years until his passing in 1966. Dorothy was a lifelong member of Long Hill United Methodist Church in Trumbull, CT where she taught Sunday School for many years and was active in Minters. She donated many hours to the Trumbull Historical Society and Trumbull Women's Club. She was a Girl Scout Leader for several years and was active in the PTA. She was an avid and very talented gardener. Unfortunately her daughters did not inherit this talent – but hey, dried arrangements can be pretty. She also enjoyed handcrafts, sewing, knitting and Bunka embroidery for which she was awarded several blue ribbons Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Theodor and Margaret, her sisters, Elizabeth Mezick and Marjorie Beattie and brother John Anton. Dorothy is survived by her daughters Linda (Peter) Velez and Marcia (Bill) Schulz and many nieces and nephews and cousins. Special thanks to her caregivers, Almara Sardio, who cared for Mom like she was her own. Took loving care of her and made the end of this long and difficult journey easier and Sherda Gordon who cared for Mom at the beginning with patience and dignity. We also appreciate the kindness and care provided by Dr. Michael Cafaro. Thanks also, to Len Kerr for watching over her for many years. A memorial service will be held Monday, August 22, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull. The family will be greeting friends and relatives on Monday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Long Hill Cemetary, 53 Middlebrooks Avenue, Trumbull. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Alzheimer's Association Connecticut Chapter, 200 Executive Boulevard, Suite 4B, Southington, CT 06489 or VITAS online at https://www.vitas.com/community-connection.
